Under the lens: TPMG Ambient AI Medical Scribe Implementation

ezPT Analyzing TPMG’s Implementation of Ambient AI Medical Scribe to 10,000+ staff

“Documentation is the bane of my existence.” This sentiment, unfortunately, echoes frequently during our Discovery calls with clinicians. The impact of documentation on clinician burnout and attrition is well-documented in numerous studies. Thankfully, AI tools are becoming ubiquitous in every industry, and healthcare is no exception. One such innovative tool transforming the landscape is the Ambient AI Medical Scribe.

Rapid, Large-scale Deployment of  Ambient AI Medical Scribe at TPMG

Kudos to The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. for rapidly rolling out a generative AI solution to address the clinical documentation burden for over 10,000 staff members. Their willingness to share their learnings with the industry is commendable. Joshua Liu, Co-founder & CEO of SeamlessMD presented an incredible analysis of the TPMG report, highlighting the potential of the technology in alleviating the documentation burden.

Adding to his analysis, I am sharing a few thoughts and questions that come to mind after reading the TPMG report.

Engagement and Adoption

From a product and growth perspective, understanding the factors driving adoption is crucial. Was it the caseloads, specialty, clinician’s years of experience, or something else? Additionally, what drives user churn? Is it a lack of training, awareness, or one more thing to worry about in the complicated world of EHR? Understanding these factors can help tailor solutions that meet clinicians’ needs effectively.

Effectiveness of Ambient Scribes

One of the critical aspects to evaluate is the time spent revising and editing notes. Is the note quality good enough? Will further improvements yield diminishing returns? These questions are vital in assessing the overall effectiveness of AI Scribes. The goal is to minimize the time clinicians spend on documentation, allowing them to focus more on patient care.

Clinician’s Experience and Well-being

It’s promising to know that 81% of the surveyed sample of 21 patients reported physicians spending less time on computers. This indicates a step in a positive direction. However, it’s essential to assess whether these time savings lead to the desired improvement in patient and clinician well-being. The true measure of success lies in the enhanced well-being of both patients and clinicians.

Quality of Documentation

The use of a modified PDQI-9 instrument to assess the quality of the generated content shows impressive average ratings of 4.6 to 4.7. However, understanding how performance varies across different specialties is crucial. This information can help fine-tune the AI models to cater to specific needs effectively.

Reflecting on the Results

What do you think of these results? As a clinician, what are your expectations from such software? As a patient, do you have any concerns? Engaging in this dialogue can lead to better understanding and continuous improvement of AI Scribes. Reach out and share your thoughts.

Conclusion

The integration of Ambient AI scribes in healthcare represents a significant step towards reducing clinician burnout and improving patient care. By addressing documentation challenges, this innovative tool enables clinicians to focus more on what truly matters – their patients. However, like with any other technology, it requires a constant conversation between AI companies and clinicians and a meticulous assessment of its implementation.
